Carper beaters were in common use until the mid-fifties when they were gradually replaced by the vacuum cleaner. The carpet beater however is until today unmatched in cleaning door and car mats and carpets. Hang them outside on a clothing line or over a fence for a good beating! In Germany houses in earlier days even had a special carpet hanger (Teppichstange). In Holland and Belgium the carpet beater was often used to correct children. Something Ian Fleming must have remembered because in his first James Bond novel Casino Royale, James Bond is tortured with a carpet beater! But above all the carpet beater is just the best tool to clean mats and doesn’t consume any electricity!
